Mexico and Argentina give backing to under-fire Infantino

Mexico and Argentina have joined forces to support Fifa president Gianni Infantino, breaking ranks with other football associations. Norway's Football Federation (NFF) President Lise Klaveness has criticized Infantino, stating that he does not possess the necessary institutional trust to govern Fifa stably. Infantino had attempted to sell off stakes in the World Cup to private investors, a proposal that faced opposition from various football governing bodies, including England, Wales, Croatia, and Albania, which have now withdrawn their support.

Despite this, Mexico's Football Federation (FMF) has backed Infantino's leadership, emphasizing the need for institutional strengthening in football. The South American body Conmebol, however, expressed concerns over Infantino's unilateral actions and called for a vote involving all 211 Fifa members before taking any decisions. The next Fifa presidential election is scheduled for March 2027, with Infantino hoping to secure a fourth term despite Uefa's opposition.
