Malaysia flight passenger tries to open emergency exit, damages window panel

A passenger on Batik Air flight OD231 attempted to breach the emergency exit window during the plane's final approach to Kochi, India, police have reported. The incident took place on Wednesday night when 36-year-old Jamsheer Athanikkal, from Kerala's Palakkad District, stood up and struck the emergency exit window. He attempted to forcibly open the exit door, as reported by NDTV.

Passengers and crew members were able to subdue and restrain Athanikkal until the aircraft landed safely at Cochin International Airport around 11:30 p.m. Investigators claim that Athanikkal kicked and damaged the inner panel of the emergency exit window before trying to open the door, according to The Star. He also threatened passengers and cabin crew during the incident.

Kerala Police arrested the man once the aircraft had landed early Thursday, and the case was filed following a complaint from Batik Air's security chief in Kochi. The investigation into the matter is ongoing. A fellow passenger, Matty Mathew, who was aboard the overnight flight, shared a video of the incident on social media. He described how most people on board were asleep and were jolted awake by the sound of air rushing through the cabin.

The damage to the window panel and interference with the door mechanism prevented the emergency exit from opening safely. Despite the terrifying situation, passengers and cabin crew worked together to restrain the individual and maintain control throughout the ordeal. An elderly passenger noted that one fellow passenger remained seated by the restrained man for the remainder of the flight, ensuring he could not move or attempt further actions.
