‘Just bihar things’: Man with fractured leg gets cardboard support; social media reacts to viral video

A man with a fractured leg received only cardboard support at a government hospital in Bihar, India. The incident came to light after a video was shared online, sparking widespread criticism. Krishna Kumar, the patient, suffered his injury in a road accident on August 3. He was transported to Manjhaul Sub-divisional Hospital by police after an auto-rickshaw struck his vehicle.

Cardboard pieces were used as temporary support and bandaged around his injured leg. Krishna was later referred to Sadar Hospital in Begusarai, where he received an IV drip and initial care. However, he was informed that a plaster cast would take a week. Disappointed with the treatment, Krishna opted for private care. The viral video led to significant backlash, with many questioning the quality of government healthcare facilities despite prior investments.

The hospital's in-charge defended the use of cardboard as commonly used first aid, while acknowledging the shortage of orthopaedic doctors and plaster of Paris. Begusarai Civil Surgeon investigated the matter and promised a formal inquiry if negligence was confirmed. Social media reactions ranged from sarcasm to frustration, highlighting the broader issues of inadequate medical supplies and callousness within the healthcare system in Bihar.
