Japanese toilet aims to attract foreign tourists but not everybody is happy about it

A rural Japanese town has unveiled a high-tech public toilet in a bid to boost tourism, but not everyone is pleased with the extravagant design. The new facility, located at JR Kinashi Station in Kagawa Prefecture, boasts separate men's, women's, and multi-purpose toilets with modern amenities. But what truly sets it apart are the nightly projection mapping shows displayed on its exterior, featuring illuminated angel wings during the week and various artworks on weekends. These creative lighting displays aim to showcase local talent and attract visitors to the area.

Despite the innovative concept, the project has sparked division among locals over its cost. The entire endeavor reportedly cost around 100 million yen (US$670,000), leading some residents to argue that the money could have been better spent elsewhere. Others, however, see the discussion as a positive way to bring attention to their town and its unique attractions.

Kinashi Station, known for being Japan's leading producer of pine bonsai, already attracts international visitors interested in the local craft, so the hopes are that the unusual toilet will help draw more tourists to the region.

While the return on investment for such a costly project remains to be seen, there's no denying that the toilet has put Kinashi Station on the map, garnering significant media attention. Whether it will ultimately breathe new life into the town remains to be determined, but one thing is certain – the toilet has certainly put the station in the spotlight.
