James Agalga tipped to replace Mahama Ayariga as NDC Majority Leader

James Agalga, a Member of Parliament from Builsa North, is considered the frontrunner to succeed Mahama Ayariga as the NDC Majority Leader after the latter's appointment to President Mahama's cabinet, according to sources within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus. Ayariga, who previously served as Majority Leader, has been reassigned as the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs following the cabinet reshuffle announced on August 7, 2026.

The NDC Caucus has reportedly opted for Agalga over Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the South Dayi MP, who was also a frontrunner for the position. Agalga, a former Deputy Minister for Interior under President Mahama's previous administration, holds a Master's degree in Conflict, Peace, and Security from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.

Currently, he serves as the Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament's Defence and Interior Committee, making him central to discussions on national security and governance.

Political strategists believe Agalga's experience in executive administration and parliamentary work will aid him in managing government business in the House. This selection also ensures continuity in the NDC's parliamentary leadership, as both Agalga and Ayariga hail from the Upper East Region. Factors such as regional representation and parliamentary dynamics were taken into account when discussions about the replacement were held.

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who has been Majority Chief Whip since January 2025, was also seen as a strong contender for the position due to his expertise in coordinating parliamentary strategy and managing legislative work. However, the NDC ultimately chose Agalga's approach and experience, particularly as the party gears up to handle an increasingly competitive parliamentary landscape ahead of the 2028 general election, which is set two and a half years away.

In his potential role, Agalga will be tasked with coordinating government legislative priorities, maintaining unity within the Majority side, and steering parliamentary proceedings in the lead-up to the 2028 general election.
