International Beer Day: Here’s everything to know about the beverage, and where to score some local deals

International Beer Day is a celebration of the world's most popular alcoholic beverage, with festivities taking place on August 7, 2026. No one is quite sure who first invented beer, as it likely developed over time and became a staple in Neolithic civilizations. Beer is believed to have originated in ancient Mesopotamia, with the Sumerians brewing barley beer around 10,000 BCE. It was safer to drink than water during those times and held significant importance in various ancient societies.

Beer played a crucial role in the Babylonian Empire, where workers were paid a daily ration of it, reflecting its value and power. In ancient Egypt, beer was used as payment for workers. The introduction of hops by Christian monks in the Middle Ages marked a turning point, leading to the modern craft beer movement and college fraternity parties. Today, beer continues to be a favorite alcoholic drink worldwide.

According to Alcohol.org, approximately 446 billion liters of alcohol are consumed annually, with around 400 billion liters being beer or cider. In the United States, beer accounts for 46% of alcohol consumption, followed by 37% for spirits and 17% for wine.

Legacy Hall in Plano, Texas, offers discounted beer from August 3 to 7 and $10 Lockdown Draft Pitchers on August 8 and 9. Lastly, Brick Alley Pub in Newport, Rhode Island, features $5 house ales.
