In politics, anything can happen, Fubara loyalist speaks on joining Wike’s camp

Chijioke Ihunwo, a former adherent of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has explained his decision to ally himself with the Rainbow Coalition, led by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. In an interview, Ihunwo maintained that he had not betrayed Fubara, merely following the governor’s directive to promote peace in the state. This stance came after Ihunwo had previously accused Wike’s camp of attempting to destabilize Rivers State.

Ihunwo reaffirmed his loyalty to Fubara, stating that the governor’s appeal to his followers was the reason for his decision. He dismissed allegations that his actions had exacerbated the crisis, emphasizing that he had a personal relationship with the governor and had previously supported him during the 2023 gubernatorial primary.

Ihunwo argued that political realignments should not be seen as a defeat for any side, as the state belonged to everyone, and the governor aimed for peace. He also rejected calls for a public apology to Wike, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, and the assembly, stating that he did not know the individual mentioned regarding the youth council.

Furthermore, Ihunwo denied sponsoring a parallel youth council structure to undermine the recognized leadership and declined to comment on specific incidents, asserting that the past should not be revisited. He expressed no regret over his actions and reaffirmed his commitment to working with Wike’s supporters in Obio/Akpor ahead of the 2027 general elections, as instructed by the governor.
