IDF inspects cut in Kibbutz Zikim fence, search for suspects in progress - report

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Saturday morning that there is no threat to the public following the discovery of a breach in the fence surrounding Kibbutz Zikim near the Gaza border, according to Israeli media. Earlier on Saturday, Army Radio quoted security sources as stating that there was no indication of an infiltration from Gaza.

The kibbutz's security chief alerted the IDF to the cut in the fence, prompting a military search for suspects. Army Radio reported that the identity of the perpetrators remains unclear, as the exact timing of the cut's creation is still unknown.

Later on Saturday, investigations indicated that the likely motive behind the breach was copper theft, as per a report in Maariv. The thieves targeted a copper drum at an electrical worksite, attaching it to a vehicle and attempting to drag it away from the kibbutz before security forces intervened. The culprits subsequently fled the scene.

In response to the incident, residents of Kibbutz Zikim were instructed to enter protected areas, with one resident expressing concern that the nightmare of the October 7 attacks had returned. Another resident recounted their child's desperate plea, "Mom, I don't want to die. Make sure they don't come again."

Following the breach's discovery, Kibbutz Zikim informed its residents that military forces and security teams would conduct searches throughout the settlement. All residents were advised to remain indoors. According to Walla, at this stage, no hostile elements have been identified within the settlement, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the breach.
