Heavy rain batters Kerala; IMD issues red alert for seven districts

Kerala was hit by heavy rain on Friday, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue red, orange, and yellow alerts for seven districts. Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts faced the heaviest rainfall, with predictions of over 15 mm per hour and gusty winds up to 50 kmph.

Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts experienced moderate rainfall, while Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts were under a yellow alert for light to moderate rainfall. Educational institutions in Ernakulam and Thrissur declared a holiday on Friday morning, while other districts had already observed holidays due to the ongoing downpour.

Although floodwaters in Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha began to recede, several people remained in relief camps as the rain persisted. Coastal areas faced high waves, sea incursion, and strong winds, with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services warning of the Kallakkadal phenomenon. Authorities advised residents to avoid vulnerable coastal areas, small boats, and fishing vessels during high waves, and to remain cautious of coastal erosion.

Beach-related tourism and recreational activities were also discouraged until the warnings were lifted.
