GPHA announces urgent measures to ease congestion at Tema Port

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has introduced emergency actions aimed at alleviating congestion at the Port of Tema, highlighting that urgent steps are being taken to resume standard cargo operations. The congestion surge is primarily attributed to a sharp rise in imports, a parallel uptick in exports of empty containers, and heightened road traffic surrounding the port area.

The Authority pointed out that comparable congestion issues are affecting multiple ports within the West African region, leading to delays in container unloading and the transit of both loaded and empty containers.

In reaction to the situation, GPHA has rolled out stronger operational measures and alerted all pertinent stakeholders to a heightened state of readiness. These actions are being executed in tandem with shipping companies and terminal managers to boost cargo flow and optimize existing terminal capacity. Key strategies include increasing calls for empty vessels, enhancing container transfer procedures, deploying extra trucks, improving the handling and storage of empty containers, and refining yard and traffic management protocols within the port.

GPHA emphasized that these initiatives aim to alleviate congestion, enhance efficiency, and guarantee uninterrupted international trade through Ghana’s premier seaport. The Authority urged importers, clearing agents, and cargo holders to expedite the clearance and departure of their goods from the port, stressing that timely cargo removal is crucial for expanding terminal space, boosting operational efficiency, and ensuring goods move smoothly.

"Swift cargo evacuation is vital to relieving terminal pressure and supporting the continuous trade flow through the port," the Authority noted.

Furthermore, GPHA promised stakeholders ongoing monitoring and implementation of necessary actions to tackle the issue and reestablish normal operations as swiftly as possible. The Authority expressed gratitude to the trading community and the general public for their patience, cooperation, and understanding amidst the congestion period.
