Google Wallet gives kids tap-to-pay freedom with new parental controls

Google has launched a new feature for Google Wallet that allows US parents to establish a digital spending account for their children and teens. This tool, which Google has not given a catchy name to, aims to assist parents in fostering responsible financial habits among their kids. By enabling parents to monitor their children's purchases and prevent overspending, the feature provides a layer of financial control.

Parents can view their child's account activity through a list of transactions or receive push notifications via Family Link if they enable this function. In addition to monitoring, parents can also implement a spending timeout or remotely lock down the account, should a device be lost or stolen. The digital spending account allows children to make payments using their Android phone or Wear OS device, provided the merchant accepts Google Pay.

While Apple offers a similar feature called Apple Cash Family, Google is responding to the demand for enhanced parental controls in the Android ecosystem. For Android-focused families concerned about their children's spending habits during summer break, this update appears to be a valuable addition.
