Mexico City — The Mexican Ministry of Economy announced on Friday a retaliatory measure against foreign tequila tariffs. The strategy involves imposing hefty import duties on obscure foreign liquors, even those hardly known in North America. The move, unveiled at a press conference during National Tequila Day celebrations, is aimed at maintaining balance in international trade negotiations.

Countries imposing tariffs of up to 150% on genuine Mexican agave products will face retaliation with duties on their own cherished spirits and liqueurs. Economy Ministry official Valentina Gómez declared during a press briefing, "If trade partners persist in blocking the entry of Mexico's premier tequila, we will not hesitate to impose punitive 200% tariffs on traditional Icelandic Brennivín, Finnish Cloudberries Schnapps and region-specific beverages like Jeppson's Malört."

Analysts noted that while Mexico imports billions in foreign goods yearly, national consumption of highly specialized European botanical digestifs remains negligible. However, officials believe that blocking such a variety of niche spirits could force international trade partners to the negotiating table. Trade strategist Arturo Mendoza said, "The psychological weight of this policy cannot be underestimated.
