Egypt targets record-breaking 20+ million tourists in 2026

Egypt aims to break records by welcoming more than 20 million international tourists in 2026, according to projections. This surge is driven by growing demand from the Arab and Gulf markets, along with extensive airport expansions and increased hotel capacity. The Arab market is particularly pivotal for this growth, with tourist arrivals from Gulf nations and Jordan experiencing a significant increase.

New Alamein City, in particular, has emerged as a top Arab summer destination, having witnessed a remarkable 450% rise in charter flight traffic and hosting visitors from 104 nationalities, primarily from Gulf countries.

According to Hamdi Ezz, Head of the Tourism Syndicate, the Arab market has solidified its role as a core pillar for Egypt's tourism sector. He anticipates that total tourist arrivals will surpass 20 million by the end of 2026, driven by political and security stability, infrastructure upgrades, and rising sectoral investments. In 2025, Egypt attracted approximately 19 million tourists, marking a 21% growth rate compared to the previous year.

Ezz highlighted that indicators for the current season suggest sustained momentum, supported by stability, expanded infrastructure projects, and improved hospitality services. The city of New Alamein stands out as one of the premier Arab summer destinations, attracting visitors from diverse backgrounds and contributing significantly to the tourism surge.

Ezz emphasized that Egypt now presents itself as an all-inclusive destination offering natural beauty, rich heritage, top-notch service quality, and warm hospitality. He emphasized that this growth signifies more than just an increase in numbers, representing a genuine shift in Egypt's tourism standing, establishing a new phase of partnership with Arab markets.

The tourism sector, bolstered by airport upgrades, expanding hotel capacity, and the launch of new destinations like New Alamein, is set to continue its growth trajectory.

Dr. Magdy Sadek, a member of the Chamber of Travel and Tourism Agencies, noted that Egypt is currently witnessing high demand from Arab tourists, particularly in popular destinations like the North Coast, Hurghada, Sharm El-Sheikh, and Alexandria. He explained that various tourist destinations, led by these key locations, are attracting growing numbers of Arab visitors due to the sense of familiarity and cultural closeness they feel while visiting Egypt.

Sadek emphasized that Arab tourists view Egypt as an extension of their own environment, offering the safety, stability, and high service quality they seek, which is why the country has become their preferred choice over other competing destinations. He attributed the increase in arrivals to a decline in interest in alternative destinations, along with the allure of Egypt's safety and stability, coupled with its top-tier service quality.

Sadek also pointed out that the country's historical and cultural significance, combined with its continuous willingness to welcome visitors from across the Arab world, makes it the closest and most appealing destination for its Arab counterparts.
