Delhi rain floods streets, disrupts traffic; locals use makeshift raft to ferry schoolchildren

Delhi faced heavy rainfall on Friday, leading to flooded streets and disrupted traffic, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). A red alert was issued due to persistent downpours causing waterlogging, congestion, and localized flooding across the National Capital Region.

The morning saw intermittent showers, transitioning into light to moderate rainfall throughout the day. The IMD predicted heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Delhi, particularly between early morning and noon, with lighter showers returning in the evening and night.

Visuals showed vehicles navigating flooded roads, while some commuters walked through waterlogged streets. Severe congestion and flooding resulted from heavy rainfall, prompting authorities in Gurugram to deploy civic teams to clear waterlogged roads and monitor drainage systems.

Residents were advised to avoid low-lying areas prone to water accumulation. The most severe waterlogging occurred in Gurugram, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, and East Delhi, especially along GT Road and Dilshad Garden.

Social media reactions expressed frustration over recurring civic challenges, with some comparing the rain intensity to Mumbai's monsoon. Others noted the need for a proper drainage system. Amid the downpour, residents gathered at India Gate to enjoy the rain.

Heavy rainfall inundated arterial roads and low-lying areas in Gurugram, causing extensive waterlogging and traffic delays. The IMD warned of further heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning in Gurugram and neighboring districts, advising caution for travelers.
