Decade-long push empowered Arunachal's handloom sector: CM

Chief Minister Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh marked the 10th anniversary of the state's commitment to empowering its handloom sector. The CM announced that over 77,000 weavers and 17,016 allied workers are dedicated to preserving the region's rich cultural heritage while expanding the reach of indigenous handlooms and GI-tagged products through skill development and digital initiatives.

Celebrating National Handloom Day, Khandu highlighted the sector's significance in the rural economy and the government's efforts to strengthen it. The government has established 88 craft centers, trained 886 weavers, and implemented 22 cluster development programs and nine out-of-state initiatives to improve weavers' skills, productivity, and market access.

Arunachal Pradesh boasts 11 Geographical Indication-registered products, including traditional textiles of various indigenous communities. The state has also introduced digital initiatives like Arun Shil, Digital Yarn Depot, Integrated Department Portal, and a dedicated website to provide weavers with digital identity, easier access to government services, and improved market opportunities.

Khandu emphasized that handloom is a cornerstone of Arunachal Pradesh's cultural identity and a vital source of livelihoods, stating that the sector safeguards the state's cultural legacy while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for thousands of families.
