Cassidy supports Todd Blanche, rescuing Trump's embattled attorney general pick

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., has announced his support for Todd Blanche to be confirmed as the Attorney General, providing a crucial vote for President Donald Trump's embattled nominee. This decision comes after two other Republican senators, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, stated their opposition to Blanche's confirmation. With Cassidy's vote, Blanche now has the 50 votes needed for confirmation, assuming no other Republicans change their stance.

Currently, Republicans hold 53 seats, but Senators Murkowski and Collins have declared they would vote against Blanche, while Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is absent from the Senate. Cassidy clarified that his decision is not a referendum on President Trump but rather a vote on Blanche's qualifications in specific circumstances. Blanche, Trump's former personal attorney and acting Attorney General, faced resistance from some Republicans over his leadership of the Justice Department and concerns about its independence from the White House.

The confirmation process involved ensuring the rescission of a $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund and clarifying an agreement protecting Trump and his family from tax audits. Blanche met privately with Epstein survivors following his confirmation hearing, despite initial accusations from the group that he showed no remorse and provided no indication of further investigation or accountability.

Cassidy expressed that he was not entirely satisfied with the current situation but argued that Trump's administration could be persistent, making Blanche's confirmed position more effective in pushing back against the president. Cassidy also noted that Blanche's management of the department received positive reviews from current and former prosecutors.
