Boston Dynamics’ Atlas Robot Can Change Its Own Battery in Under 3 Minutes

Boston Dynamics' Atlas humanoid robot can swap its own battery in under three minutes, a feature aimed at reducing downtime during industrial work. The robot autonomously navigates to a battery station, replaces a depleted battery, and resumes work without human intervention. Atlas typically operates for four hours on a full charge and around two hours during heavy lifting.

Production Atlas is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 198 pounds, capable of handling sustained loads of 66 pounds and brief lifts of 110 pounds. Its hardware includes tactile sensing in its hands and a 360-degree camera system. While Atlas has gained attention for its athletic capabilities, the battery swapping feature is seen as a practical solution to a major issue for humanoid robots: downtime.

Companies can keep Atlas operating for multiple shifts with minimal human involvement. The ability to perform tasks like battery swapping and limb replacement further enhances Atlas' autonomy. However, the real test will be whether Atlas can consistently and reliably perform useful industrial tasks at scale, as companies' primary concerns lie in the robot's reliability, safety, repeatability, and cost-effectiveness.
