Atletico Madrid in talks for Tottenham captain Romero

Atletico Madrid has been engaged in discussions regarding a potential transfer for Tottenham Hotspur's captain, Cristian Romero. The Argentine defender, who recently inked a new four-year contract with Spurs back in August, is anticipated to depart the club this summer. Inter Milan has also shown interest in signing the 28-year-old, who featured in all seven of Argentina's matches during their World Cup campaign, which ended in a loss to Spain.

However, Romero is a significant target for Atletico manager Diego Simeone, and the Spanish club is reportedly moving forward with another pursuit of the centre-back. Tottenham is aware of Atletico's intentions, and an agreement on personal terms for the player is not expected to pose any challenges. Tottenham's manager, Roberto de Zerbi, recently stated that he would respect the decision of players if they were to seek a move away.

Romero missed the end of the previous season due to a knee injury, as Spurs managed to avoid relegation on the final day of the campaign. He was sent off twice during the season, resulting in Spurs finishing 17th in the league table. Micky van de Ven, another centre-back at Tottenham, is reportedly close to finalizing a new five-year contract with the club.
