Anti-Muslim lawmaker Andy Ogles loses Republican primary

Tennessee Republican Congressman Andy Ogles, known for his anti-Muslim remarks, has lost his primary race to dairy farmer and state agriculture official Charlie Hatcher. Hatcher, who also supports Trump, won the election despite facing the endorsement of the U.S. President, which is often seen as a decisive advantage in Republican races.

Ogles' defeat can be attributed to various factors including the redrawing of the district lines, which became possible due to a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that undermined the Voting Rights Act. However, Ogles was particularly hostile towards Muslims, as evidenced by his social media posts and legislative proposals. He has floated several hardline measures targeting Muslim immigrants, including introducing legislation to ban immigration from certain Muslim-majority countries.

Ogles' divisive rhetoric, including his declaration that "Pluralism is a lie," and his assertion that "homosexuality has no place in America," have drawn widespread condemnation from Democrats and human rights organizations alike. Despite the backlash, Ogles managed to retain the support of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus and managed to secure the backing of U.S. President Donald Trump.
