Indonesian domestic helper Wahyuni Tanjung, 44, has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court after pleading guilty to leaving a two-year-old child unattended in a public swimming pool, resulting in the child's death. The court heard that the caregiver, who had a relationship of custody with the child, committed the act, leading to the victim's demise in a public swimming pool in Sentul residential area between 6 and 7 pm on July 28.

The offense was committed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to 20 years, or both. The court ordered the woman to serve her prison sentence immediately, starting from her arrest on July 29. The investigation also revealed that Tanjung, who had only been working as a domestic helper for a month, left the victim and her five-year-old brother in the public swimming pool without any life-saving equipment or supervision.

Moreover, the crime was worsened by the fact that she left both children unattended when she went to the restroom. In the trial, Deputy Public Prosecutor Md Subri Hashim requested the court to impose a concurrent sentence as a deterrent. Tanjung, who was not represented by a lawyer, argued that the caregiver, who was responsible for the children, should not have left the victim and her younger brother alone without any supervision.
