AFL issues Cats a 'please explain' over defender's concussion contract

The AFL has issued Geelong a "please explain" notice over a controversial concussion contract involving defender Jake Kolodjashnij. Kolodjashnij, who is listed as an emergency player for Geelong's upcoming match against Essendon, faces an uncertain future in the AFL after the league handed him a belated notice. In 2024, Geelong secretly agreed with Kolodjashnij to take legal responsibility for future brain trauma, aiming to protect the club and its medical staff from potential court action.

The agreement emerged following a bombshell concussion case, with pressure mounting on the league and Geelong after no punishment was handed down initially. Geelong's chief executive, Steve Hocking, acknowledged the deal was a "misstep" and expressed uncertainty about the consequences Geelong might face. Kolodjashnij, who has played 209 games, confirmed he participated in the AFL's independent concussion panel process and respected its independence.

He expressed disappointment over the public disclosure of his private medical information but remains healthy and focused on playing for Geelong for the remainder of the season.
