Where Is Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi?

The military-backed government in Myanmar recently released four photos of Aung San Suu Kyi, the country's detained former leader, who met with Arnaud de Baecque, the International Committee of the Red Cross's resident representative in Myanmar, on August 3rd. Her son, Kim Aris, stated that this could be a positive step, but it should not be the final action.

Sean Turnell, an Australian economist who once worked with Suu Kyi and shared a cell with her during the 2021 military coup, concurred. He emphasized the need for evidence of life for the approximately 20,000 individuals believed to be held as political prisoners within Myanmar's jails. Turnell, who returned to his Beyond the Mekong role and discussed the situation with The Diplomat's Luke Hunt, also highlighted the challenges faced by the opposition National Unity Government (NUG) and the various armed groups engaged in combat against the military.

The NUG, its People's Defense Force (PDF), and Myanmar's numerous ethnic armed organizations (EAOs) have encountered a resurgence of military force and a counter-offensive aimed at reclaiming territory seized by the rebels during 2023 and 2024. Min Aung Hlaing, the coup leader and now military-backed civilian leader, has engaged in diplomatic efforts to secure international legitimacy for his administration within ASEAN, which seeks the junta's return to its Five-Point Consensus as a peace roadmap.

Turnell, who endured 650 days in prison before his release in November 2022, asserts that the ongoing civil war, which has resulted in around 100,000 deaths, cannot be won by the military alone. The NUG and EAOs persist in developing a federal framework for a nation plagued by ethnic disparities, but eventually, peace will prevail.
