USFK says no white phosphorus found at Osan base after suspected leak alert

In a recent incident at the U.S. Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, emergency responders confirmed that no white phosphorus was present following an initial alert. The U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) released the findings on Thursday, dispelling a report that a suspected leak of white phosphorus had occurred at the base.

The alert was initially issued on July 28 by the Pyeongtaek city government, following a report from the U.S. military regarding a possible white phosphorus leak. Upon conducting a routine munitions inspection, USFK personnel identified crystallization and residue, but determined that it was not white phosphorus or contained any traces of the substance. Further analysis revealed that the residue was non-hazardous surface corrosion caused by environmental exposure over time.

Upon discovering the residue, emergency response teams immediately contained the situation and ensured that base operations continued without interruption. No injuries were reported during the incident. USFK officials expressed their appreciation for the trust placed in them by the residents of Pyeongtaek and pledged to maintain transparency, safety, and constant updates regarding the situation.
