Ukrainian court sets 6 million-hryvnia bail for former envoy to the U.S.

Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court has set a bail of 6 million hryvnias for former Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, according to Transparency International Ukraine. The court also instructed Stefanishyna to comply with various requirements such as appearing before National Anti-Corruption Bureau detectives and refraining from contacting witnesses in a case of alleged illicit enrichment and false asset declaration.

Stefanishyna did not declare two properties in Kyiv, their renovation expenses, rent payments, the use of a Mercedes-Benz, airfare, and her mother's medical treatment in the investigation. On August 5, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office served Stefanishyna with a notice of suspicion.

She resigned as Ukraine's ambassador to the U.S. on August 3. Prosecutors claim the case involves properties acquired by others following Stefanishyna's instructions. In response to the allegations, Stefanishyna stated that she had nothing to hide and that the procedural measures were part of normal law enforcement activity. Stefanishyna had previously faced suspicion in another NABU case involving former Justice Minister Olena Lukash, who is accused of embezzling 2.5 million hryvnias in 2013-2014.
