Ukraine’s ex-US envoy suspected of ‘illegal enrichment’

Ukraine's former ambassador to Washington, Olha Stefanishyna, has been implicated in a corruption investigation, according to court and law enforcement sources. Following her dismissal from her US position, Stefanishyna was granted bail of 6 million hryvnias (approximately US$134,000) by the High Anti-Corruption Court. The court accused her of "illicit enrichment" and providing false information in a declaration.

She maintained composure regarding the allegations, describing the situation as "calm and without unnecessary emotion." Stefanishyna further stated that the surrounding commotion resembled a "storm in a teacup." She shared a photo online, seemingly at the court premises. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau alleges that Stefanishyna was involved in illicit enrichment involving over 13.9 million hryvnias.

Investigators claim she possesses undeclared assets, including apartments and other properties, which cannot be accounted for by her official income. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed Stefanishyna from her Washington posting on Monday, although he has not officially nominated a replacement for the crucial position.

The role is vital for Ukraine, as it relies on US arms supplies and intelligence-sharing in the ongoing conflict against Russia. Zelensky previously offered the position to Yulia Svyrydenko, a former prime minister, but negotiations were ongoing at the time of reporting.
