U.S. senator reintroduces bill to expedite humanitarian aid to N. Koreans

Washington, Aug. 6 -- In a bid to provide urgent humanitarian aid to North Korea, U.S. Senator Edward Markey has reintroduced a bill, with Senator Elizabeth Warren joining as a co-sponsor. The legislation aims to expedite life-saving medical care, food aid, nutritional support, and access to basic services for the people of the isolated nation.

As of now, the full text of the bill is yet to be published on Congress' website. Previously, in 2021, Markey had introduced a similar bill, advocating for the enhancement of U.S. sanctions exemptions to enable the delivery of goods and items that support humanitarian projects aimed at meeting the basic human needs in North Korea.

The bill also proposed simplifying humanitarian travel authorizations, given the ongoing U.S. travel ban on citizens to North Korea since 2017, a measure due to the associated risks of being arrested and detained in the country.
