TRIBUTE: Estelle Ellis, the Eastern Cape’s fiercest voice for the voiceless, has died

Daily Maverick journalist and fierce advocate Estelle Ellis died on Wednesday night, 5 August 2026, leaving a profound void in South African journalism. Born in Sasolburg in 1974, she began her career as an intern at Die Burger before working for the Cape Argus, The Star, and The Herald in Gqeberha. Estelle's reporting focused on the Eastern Cape's often-overlooked stories, including hospitals, courts, water crisis, and the people the state had forgotten.

She also led Daily Maverick's coverage of the devastating Covid-19 pandemic, providing crucial insight and guidance during the crisis. Her dedication to social justice was evident in her work with various organizations, such as Siyavuka for Kids, Project Sparkle, and Angel Bags. Estelle's impact extended beyond her journalism, as she championed causes like ensuring children in the metro were fed properly during their first 1,000 days and pressuring the government to leave state frail care facilities open.

Despite her professional success, including four Discovery Health Journalist Awards and several other accolades, Estelle was known for her kindness and supportive nature, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met. South Africa and the journalism community are deeply saddened by her loss, as she had been a powerful voice for the voiceless and an inspiration to many.
