TN Agri Budget: Govt bets on AI, Machine Learning to deliver real-time assistance to farmers

On August 5, 2026, the Tamil Nadu government unveiled a series of initiatives in its State Budget for 2026-27, including an AI-enabled planning approval system and a new rental housing scheme. Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson presented these announcements, detailing an allocation of ₹8,852 crore for the Housing and Urban Development Department, up from the Interim Budget's ₹7,547 crore. This marks a significant increase in funding for the department, which previously received ₹8,737.71 crore in FY 2025-26.

The Department of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) along with the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and various rural and urban local bodies will utilize a Single Platform for Efficient Expedited Development (SPEED), an AI-driven online system aimed at expediting planning permissions. This initiative, funded with ₹40 crore, seeks to improve efficiency and transparency across Tamil Nadu's planning landscape.

In a bid to accelerate housing construction, the Budget also highlighted that 24,131 under-construction multi-storeyed tenements would be completed by the end of 2026, while an additional 14,194 tenements would commence construction during the same year. A total of ₹1,253 crore has been allocated to support this effort.

A key component of the Housing Scheme, the Metropolitan Youth and Family Housing Scheme (MY-HOME), will be a pilot program developed through a public-private partnership model. By the end of seven years, this scheme aims to develop one lakh housing units across the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA), leveraging an estimated investment of ₹15,000 crore.

The Tamil Nadu Shelter Fund will provide ₹3,500 crore in Viability Gap Funding to support this ambitious project. The initiative will also introduce a Digital Rental Voucher system to ensure safe and affordable housing options for low-income families and youth, contributing to the long-term transformation of the CMA.
