The Pentagon recently began posting biblical messages on its official social media accounts, sparking controversy and criticism. Senior military leaders previously expressed concerns that the Iran war was straining U.S. forces, including missile defenses and naval resources meant for Israel's protection. In response, the Defense Department's social media accounts began sharing images overlaid with the phrase "SEND ME."

The messages appeared alongside images of military personnel, such as a service member watching a helicopter above an aircraft carrier and a soldier silhouetted in the dark. One post quoted Isaiah 6:8, a verse about a prophet's acceptance of God's call to deliver a message of judgment. Historian Jemar Tisby explained that the verse is often used in American evangelical culture to declare willingness to serve, but its original context refers to a nation being sent for divine judgment, not a foreign enemy.

The Pentagon declined to explain the intent behind the posts, which followed months of debate over religion's role within the Defense Department. Former military leaders and constitutional advocates had raised concerns about the appointment of a Christian activist to the Air Force Academy's Board of Visitors and allegations that commanders described the Iran war as "part of God's divine plan."

The recent posts placed biblical language directly on the Defense Department's official social media accounts, reflecting what Tisby viewed as part of a broader effort to incorporate a narrow vision of Christianity into the military and federal government.
