Tamil Nadu Budget: One-sovereign gold coin, silk saree announced for brides; homes to be set up for senior citizens, trans persons

The Tamil Nadu government unveiled ambitious plans during its latest budget presentation. Finance Minister Marie Wilson announced the distribution of a one-sovereign gold coin and a silk saree to eligible women on their wedding day, a promise made by the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) during the elections. An allocation of ₹812 crore has been earmarked for this 'Annan Seer' scheme.

In addition, the government pledged to create integrated senior citizen homes across all districts, with the first 12 homes set to open in 12 districts, each accommodating 40 residents. These homes will provide essential amenities like qualified caregivers, medical personnel, and recreational facilities. The first phase will also see the establishment of senior citizens' recreation centers in five districts, featuring libraries, yoga and meditation spaces, and indoor sports amenities.

The budget also committed to constructing 500 Anganwadi centers during the current financial year, aiming to deliver quality early childhood care and a safe environment for children attending these centers. To empower the transgender community, skill training will be provided in income-generating trades through the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation.

Subsidy-linked bank credit facilities will be extended to help them establish enterprises, and they will also receive assistance in availing bank loans for self-employment, with a subsidy of up to ₹50,000.

A total of ₹9,818 crore has been allocated to the Social Welfare and Women's Empowerment Department for these initiatives.
