Tamil Nadu 2026-27 revised budget: A graphical overview

Tamil Nadu's 2026-27 revised budget was presented in the state assembly by Finance Minister Marie Wilson after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, formed the government. The budget's total expenditure is projected to be ₹4,72,585 crores, marking a 7.6% increase from the previous year's budget of ₹4,40,000 crores.

Education received 11.2% of the budget, while rural and urban development each received 8.4% and 8.2% respectively. However, educationists have criticized the reduction in higher education allocations, which dropped by ₹101 crore compared to the last fiscal year due to faculty vacancies and rising costs. The budget introduced a new 'Integrated Urban Development Mission' scheme with an allocation of ₹2,117 crores, focusing on civic infrastructure, urban public health, and AI-driven e-governance.

The revenue deficit was calculated at 1.37% of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), up from 1.2% in the interim budget. Fiscal deficit was 3% of GSDP, consistent with the interim budget. The government's primary funding source is its own tax revenue, accounting for 43% of the budget, with non-tax revenue making up 33.1%. The center contributed around 18% through grants-in-aid and taxes.

Outstanding debt stood at ₹10,98,768 crore, or 27.01% of GSDP, a slight decrease from the previous interim budget. Debt repayment amounted to 9% of the government's expenditure.
