Manchester City midfielder Rodri is facing a crucial decision this summer - whether to re-sign with City or join La Liga rivals Real Madrid or Barcelona. Rodri missed a large portion of the 2024-25 season due to a serious knee injury and a hamstring issue. Despite that, he returned to peak form during the 2024 World Cup, leading Spain to victory and earning the Ballon d'Or. However, Rodri is currently sidelined after undergoing back surgery. City are currently on a pre-season tour in the Far East and will face Arsenal in the Community Shield next Sunday, but Rodri has not yet joined his teammates.

Upon his return, he must decide whether to sign a deal with City, complete his current contract and become a free agent next summer, or consider a move to his homeland. City's management is confident in the player's availability for next season, although a substantial fee would be needed for a potential sale. A move to Barcelona would grant Rodri the opportunity to join two-time champions, reunite with fellow countrymen from Spain, and reconnect with ex-City teammate Bernardo Silva, who transferred to Real Madrid this summer.

However, the move might face some resistance, as Rodri has previously stated that he doesn't turn down the best clubs in the world, particularly in the case of Real Madrid. If he were to join Barcelona, he might face some criticism from fans, especially given his previous time at Atletico Madrid. Losing Silva to Real Madrid has dealt a significant blow to City, and losing Rodri would further compound the issue, requiring one of Mateo Kovacic, Nico Gonzalez, or Tijjani Reijnders to fill the void.

With newly signed club record goalkeeper Elliot Anderson set to be a starter, the absence of Rodri would create a notable void alongside the talented England international. City are still in discussions to sign 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, but the Moroccan teenager would need to prove his worth to replace the esteemed boots currently worn by Rodri.
