President Sheikh Mohamed marks 60th anniversary of accession of Sheikh Zayed as Ruler of Abu Dhabi

On Thursday, President Sheikh Mohamed commemorated the 60th anniversary of the accession of UAE Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as Ruler of Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Zayed assumed the role on August 6, 1966, a momentous occasion that laid the groundwork for the Union and initiated the nation's collective trajectory. The visionary leader transformed Abu Dhabi from a tranquil coastal area into a contemporary, flourishing metropolis.

In a statement on X, President Mohamed expressed gratitude for Sheikh Zayed's foresight, stating, "Inspired by Sheikh Zayed’s leadership and vision, we will continue to advance his enduring belief that people must always be placed at the heart of efforts to build a sustainable and prosperous future for our nation." The milestone marks the beginning of the UAE's modernization, economic growth, and the implementation of progressive policies to benefit citizens.

Sheikh Zayed's impact on education, healthcare, and public infrastructure cannot be overstated. Before 1966, he served as the Ruler's Representative of the Eastern Region of Al Ain, where he initiated reforms such as improving irrigation systems and establishing local schools and hospitals. Upon becoming Ruler of Abu Dhabi, he championed the formation of the UAE on December 2, 1971, and prioritized the equitable distribution of oil revenue to the public.

His commitment to education led to the establishment of public schools, free education for all citizens, and the creation of United Arab Emirates University in 1976. Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, recognized Sheikh Zayed as a leader and thinker who fostered both the nation and its people. He emphasized that Zayed's legacy transcends leadership and governance, as he built a nation and a human being, forging a profound connection between individuals and their homeland.

The Zayed for Good Foundation, established in honor of Sheikh Zayed, recently marked its 34th anniversary. Since 1992, the foundation has provided over Dh2 billion ($545 million) in aid to more than 180 countries, shifting from traditional humanitarian efforts to sustainable development initiatives. These efforts focus on food security, economic empowerment, and the adoption of advanced technologies.

Chairman of the foundation, Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, highlighted the foundation's dedication to Sheikh Zayed's vision, emphasizing that humanitarian work extends beyond assistance to empowering people, enhancing their capabilities, and creating opportunities for dignified and sustainable livelihoods.
