Pitching contest early and fireworks late in Tigers loss

The middle game of a three-game series between the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers in Seattle, Washington, saw an abundance of pitching incidents, including several ejections and a decisive home run in a 4-2 Mariners victory. The Tigers' pitching staff had undergone some changes, with Drew Anderson making his debut in the starting rotation.

Anderson, who previously pitched as a starter in South Korea, had been utilized in various roles this season. The Mariners took advantage of their home advantage, as Bryan Woo posted an impressive 2.20 ERA at home this season, compared to a 6.71 ERA away from the T-Mobile Park. The first base runner of the night was Max Clark, who led off the third inning with an inside-out pitch hit by an inside sinker, advancing to second base.

With two outs, Kevin McGonigle grounded out to strand Clark. The Mariners capitalized on the Tigers' struggles, getting back-to-back singles in the bottom of the third inning. The fourth inning proved to be eventful, with Gleyber Torres leading off with a single and attempting to advance to third base on a Dillon Dingler single.

However, Torres was tagged out, allowing Riley Greene to put two runners on base. Colt Keith then hit a three-run home run, but it was called back by a leaping Randy Arozarena. Spencer Torkelson struck out, and with two outs, Tyler Holton entered the game. Holton faced Josh Naylor, who popped out to shortstop, ending the inning.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Dingler on first base and two out saw Keith hit a ball at 108 mph directly at the right fielder, resulting in no runs scored. With two outs in the sixth inning, Tyler Holton retired all six batters he faced. In the seventh inning, Dingler singled to center field but was erased on a double-play grounder by Eduardo Valencia.

Drew Sommers entered the game to limit the damage and struck out Naylor. With one out in the seventh inning, Clark singled to center field, but the inning ended on a double-play grounder by Valencia. The Mariners' closer, Andrés Muñoz, entered the ninth inning and struck out two batters and grounded out a third, securing the victory for the Mariners with a final score of 4-2.
