Pistons Still Haven't Given Cade Cunningham What He Needs

Despite showing promise last season, the Detroit Pistons appear to have failed to provide Cade Cunningham with the support he requires during the offseason. Cunningham demonstrated his potential to become the franchise's centerpiece, yet the playoff loss highlighted the team's persistent issues. To succeed under pressure, the Pistons needed increased scoring, shot creation, and players capable of taking some of the spotlight off their young star.

Instead, they saw Tobias Harris depart in free agency, a loss of Detroit's second leading playoff scorer. The Pistons did, however, acquire John Collins, Isaiah Joe, and Ebuka Okorie, moves that should enhance certain aspects of their roster. Collins' athleticism and additional offensive option, coupled with Joe's shooting ability, which addressed one of Detroit's most pressing needs—providing more space around Cunningham—represent positive steps.

Nevertheless, the bigger concern remains unanswered: who will assist Cunningham when defenses successfully disrupt his game? While the Pistons have demonstrated improvement, they still require another dependable creator, especially as the Eastern Conference becomes more competitive. Recent moves by surrounding teams suggest Detroit's offseason hasn't generated the same excitement.

Moreover, the departure of Isaiah Stewart exacerbates the situation. His toughness and interior presence were integral to the team's identity, and replacing this type of physicality is rarely straightforward. Despite being in a more favorable position than a few years ago, Detroit's foundation is still there, and Cunningham has proven himself worthy of being at the center of their development.

However, simply having a franchise player is insufficient. Eventually, the front office must surround him with the necessary support to transform potential into genuine playoff success.
