Pakistan crackdown in PoK draws protests on UK streets

Unrest persists in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) following a crackdown by Pakistani authorities, leading to mounting frustration among the local populace. Recently, members of the British Kashmiri diaspora staged a protest in Bradford, UK, in solidarity with PoK residents and in support of the demands by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). The demonstration unfolded amid Pakistan-occupied Kashmir's ongoing assembly elections, while Islamabad has ramped up security measures in the area.

Protesters convened in Bradford's city center, displaying banners and placards that called for protection of fundamental rights, civil liberties, and human dignity. Their primary objective was to garner international attention to the deteriorating human rights scenario in PoK. During the rally, speakers alleged that security operations over the past two months had resulted in civilian casualties, induced fear among residents, and disrupted daily life.

Additionally, they pointed out that women, children, and elderly individuals were among those affected.

The protesters demanded transparent and unbiased investigations into claims of excessive use of force, house searches, and other reported human rights abuses. They urged authorities to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law. Furthermore, they appealed to the international community, human rights organizations, and the British government to keep a watchful eye on the situation in PoK and support measures aimed at safeguarding fundamental freedoms and pursuing a peaceful resolution to the concerns raised by local communities.

According to the rally organizers, residents of PoK continue to experience actions from Pakistani security forces, with several people reportedly killed or injured during confrontations with protesters in recent months. They also claimed that the ongoing elections in the region have seen low voter turnout and irregularities. Meanwhile, India has vociferously condemned Pakistan's actions in PoK, calling the local elections a "complete farce."

The Ministry of External Affairs also highlighted the prevailing atmosphere of violence, power outages, intimidation, and repression against civilians in the territory.
