OpenAI’s first gadget sounds like a tiny expressive AI companion

OpenAI's upcoming hardware product has been described as a doughnut-shaped AI companion, reminiscent of WALL-E or R2-D2. The device, which is expected to be priced between $300 and $400, will measure approximately the size of a hockey puck and offer a range of functions. These include controlling smart-home appliances, playing media, answering questions, responding to messages, and utilizing ChatGPT for assistance throughout the day.

Voice will primarily be the interface, but the device will also feature a camera and environmental sensors, allowing it to understand its surroundings without relying solely on spoken commands. Over time, OpenAI anticipates the AI will become more attuned to its owner's routines, preferences, and past interactions, enabling it to offer assistance proactively.

Equipped with advanced models, the device will facilitate human-like conversations, with microphones and speakers managing dialogue, and lights signaling when the AI is listening or responding. Additionally, certain elements of the device will move during interactions, lending it a semblance of life akin to a small robot. Collaborating with Jony Ive and his LoveFrom studio, the company aims to create a polished, non-gimmicky product.

The move to a physical form for ChatGPT could offer a unique presence in users' homes, potentially filling the void left by AV receivers in modern living rooms.
