Mike McCarthy has lauded rookie Drew Allar's performance in training camp, according to a recent update from SportsNet Pittsburgh. Despite Aaron Rodgers being the Steelers' starting quarterback since re-signing in May, a competitive quarterback battle persists behind him with Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Allar on the roster. McCarthy's comments on Thursday indicated that Allar's contributions have been noteworthy.

"He's doing what you want from a young player," McCarthy stated, noting that Allar's throws each practice day showcase the young man's progress. As the Steelers' No. 4 quarterback, Allar has been performing impressively, making throws that leave McCarthy impressed each day. The third-round pick will have the chance to make an impact in a preseason game against the Packers on August 13.

The Steelers have ranked their quarterbacks from best to worst as follows: 1. Aaron Rodgers, 2. Mason Rudolph, 3. Will Howard, and 4. Drew Allar. While Rudolph was once a favorite of previous coach Mike Tomlin, the new coaching staff and potential emergence of Howard and Allar could render him expendable. Howard has a year of experience under his belt with Rodgers, while Allar is one of the three quarterbacks brought in after McCarthy's arrival. The Steelers have until August 30 to decide how many quarterbacks to retain on the roster.
