Leader of Myanmar’s military-backed government arrives in Thailand seeking political legitimacy

Myanmar's military leader, President Min Aung Hlaing, visited Thailand on Thursday for a two-day official trip aimed at bolstering his political standing after taking power in April 2026 from an elected civilian government. During his stay, Min Aung Hlaing met with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and other Thai officials at Government House, where they reportedly signed several memorandums of understanding.

The visit has sparked controversy, with activist groups like Justice For Myanmar criticizing the trip for providing "false legitimacy" to Min Aung Hlaing and the ruling generals. In April, Min Aung Hlaing was sworn in as president following a phased election held in December and January, a process deemed a sham by critics who argued it aimed to cement the military's dominance while ostensibly restoring civilian authority.

Min Aung Hlaing's diplomatic maneuvers come as Myanmar's relations with the international community and neighboring countries have deteriorated since the military ousted the Aung San Suu Kyi-led government in February 2021. Since then, the military has faced severe human rights violations following a deadly crackdown on protests, which triggered a nationwide armed resistance movement and a protracted civil war.

Despite visits to countries like China, India, and Laos, as well as close ties with Russia, Min Aung Hlaing has largely remained isolated on the international stage. While he tries to rehabilitate his image, the Myanmar military continues to engage in a brutal war against pro-democracy resistance fighters and ethnic minority groups seeking greater autonomy across much of the country.
