Deutsche officials have raised concerns about the increasing threats posed by unmanned drones, particularly those equipped with explosives, circling over German airports. Alexander Dobrindt, the Federal Interior Minister, aptly described this new threat level. Unmanned drones, whether intentionally or accidentally guided into flight paths, present a danger to air traffic.

However, the addition of explosives elevates this danger to a new level, potentially indicative of state terrorism. The suspicion is currently pointing towards Russia, although investigations are ongoing in various directions. Dobrindt hinted at "foreign powers" potentially involved, suggesting this is not an isolated incident. The evidence points to the use of the Antonov An-124 freight aircraft, a Soviet-era plane now part of Ukrainian aviation.

This aircraft has also been chartered by the German military on occasion for transporting large cargo.
