Kerala Minister says SC directions on Mullaperiyar dam unimplemented, objects water level hike

Water Resources Minister of Kerala, Mons Joseph, stated on Thursday that the Supreme Court's directives on the safety of the Mullaperiyar dam have not been followed, and threatened legal action if Tamil Nadu proceeds with plans to raise the reservoir's water level beyond 142 feet. This announcement came a day after Tamil Nadu's budget revealed intentions to raise the water level of the 131-year-old Mullaperiyar reservoir in Kerala's Idukki district.

Joseph emphasized that Kerala firmly believes the water level should not exceed 142 feet under any circumstances. He reiterated that Kerala will not permit any increase in the water level and would approach the Supreme Court if necessary. Joseph criticized Tamil Nadu for failing to conduct inspections mandated by the Supreme Court and for not completing a basic safety audit.

The minister also highlighted that the Supreme Court had directed the strengthening of the Baby Dam, but these measures remained unimplemented. Joseph stressed that the 142-foot water level limit is the position accepted by the Supreme Court and that neither Kerala nor Tamil Nadu can alter it unilaterally. He reiterated that Kerala demands the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar and that the resolution of the issue should be through mutual consensus ensuring water requirements for both states and ensuring safety for the people of Kerala.
