Iran and Oman close to Hormuz plan but await US agreement

Iran and Oman are reportedly nearing an agreement on a new shipping route through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, but the deal is contingent upon the United States ending its naval blockade of Iran's ports. The latest development follows a string of Houthi attacks on Saudi government targets in Yemen, resulting in at least 38 deaths and 29 injuries. The Houthis claim the attacks were in response to what they describe as a Saudi-led military buildup.

Iranian officials have said the agreement would pave the way for reopening the strategic waterway, a key conduit for global oil and natural gas exports. However, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman emphasized that the deal still hinges on a resolution to the US naval blockade, stating that Iran will not concede any ground on this issue.

The US has expressed frustration with the slow pace of diplomacy with Iran, with Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledging the challenges in negotiating with Iran's fractured leadership. Despite this, Trump has hinted at a potential deal being near, but Iran's foreign ministry has denied any ongoing negotiations with Washington.
