If we lose free speech, we lose everything – Miracles Aboagye raises democracy concerns

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a hopeful National Communications Officer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed concerns over actions that may undermine Ghana's democratic liberties, specifically the right to free speech. Speaking on Joy News' PM Express, Mr. Aboagye cautioned against policies that could target individuals based on their viewpoints.

He pointed out that political power shifts and decisions made against opponents today might set a precedent for future actions. "It may be CPP, it may be PNC, be it PNP," he noted, emphasizing that no government remains in power indefinitely. Highlighting Ghana's history, including periods of military rule, Mr. Aboagye stressed that governments change even in the darkest of times.

He urged political figures not to assume permanent power and cautioned against the assumption that one will remain in authority forever. Responding to claims that his remarks might suggest retribution should the NPP regain power, Mr. Aboagye denied such an implication, stating, "No, I haven’t said that, but I am saying that precedent becomes law."

This warning stemmed from his belief that certain actions could become normalized and affect others in the future. Mr. Aboagye's apprehension was fueled by his own outspoken nature and the importance he places on free expression. He clarified that his concerns were not about a direct threat to his life but about the potential repercussions for others who might be compelled to self-censor.

According to him, these worries reflect the sentiments of many who cherish Ghana's democratic freedoms. He urged those in government to consider the long-term implications of their actions against political opponents, emphasizing that such measures could have far-reaching consequences.
