I just tried the new Samsung DeX on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 — and it has one huge upgrade

Samsung's latest foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Z Fold 8, and Z Fold 8 Ultra, have recently been released, and one of their most underrated features is Samsung DeX. This desktop interface can be accessed by plugging the phones into a monitor via USB-C, HDMI, or wirelessly on a compatible display or TV. During my week-long testing of the new Samsung DeX, I discovered an upgrade that makes it even more useful for productivity.

The main improvement is the ability to create up to four workspaces, each supporting up to five apps, allowing for a total of 20 apps to be run simultaneously. This feature makes organizing and accessing apps significantly more manageable, similar to how Windows 11 handles multiple desktops. To switch between workspaces, users can click the icon with three vertical lines in the lower-left corner of the interface.

While this new addition is a great addition, there are still a few areas where Samsung could improve Samsung DeX. First, the interface could implement Windows 11's "Snap" feature, which allows for preset layouts to better organize apps. Currently, DeX offers side-by-side multitasking, but having the ability to organize four apps at once would be a significant upgrade.

Additionally, the reintroduction of support for multiple user profiles would be invaluable. Many Android phones offer this feature, but Samsung has omitted it for several generations, preventing users from cleanly separating work and personal accounts. With Samsung's ongoing advancements in wearable displays and smart glasses, the future of Samsung DeX is promising.

As someone who often uses DeX as a portable desktop solution when away from their laptop, I find it essential for multitasking and productivity. With the added features, DeX could become even more indispensable for users on the go.
