Hong Kong lyricist Peter Lai dies at 76

Renowned Hong Kong lyricist Peter Lai, who played a pivotal role in the city's golden era of Cantonese pop music, has passed away at the age of 76, according to information provided by his family and friends on Thursday. Lai was admitted to the hospital after experiencing a stroke this year and was laid to rest on Wednesday morning, as confirmed by his son and a longtime friend during a press conference.

Famed as "The Lyrical Maverick," Lai penned the lyrics to the 1984 hit "Monica" by the legendary singer Leslie Cheung, a quintessential Hong Kong pop classic. His contributions also played a significant role in the resounding success of iconic cantopop superstars such as Sam Hui and Anita Mui. A heartfelt tribute from Hui read, "Thank you for crafting countless remarkable works for the Hong Kong cantopop scene. Your lyrics are exoteric yet never vulgar."

Lai's illustrious career peaked during the 1970s and 80s, solidifying his position as one of Hong Kong's pioneering lyricists for cantopop, alongside James Wong and Jimmy Lo. His compositions were celebrated for their relatable appeal to the working class and everyday life during Hong Kong's economic boom.
