Free ChatGPT Users Get Unlimited Text Chats and GPT-5.6 Luna

OpenAI has announced that the default model for Free and Go ChatGPT users will be GPT-5.6 Luna, providing them with unlimited text chats and enhanced capabilities as opposed to the previous GPT-5.5 Instant model. The company is allowing Free and Go users to access unlimited text chats without any rate limits on text-based interactions.

However, limits will still be in place for file uploads, images, and other ChatGPT tools. To further improve reasoning, OpenAI is introducing a "Think" button that activates higher-order thinking.

For Plus and Pro users, GPT-5.6 Sol is being implemented as the more reliable model that provides factually accurate and focused answers. OpenAI has also added a slider to enable users to control the amount of thought invested in each response. Additionally, the company has fine-tuned the level of detail the model provides for each question, preventing it from offering unnecessary information when it's not required.

GPT-5.6 Sol is expected to avoid superfluous formatting and offer helpful corrections when a simple agreement would not suffice. It is also intended to make fewer mistakes, particularly when dealing with answers that require dates, numbers, sources, rules, or assumptions. However, the Sol update is exclusively for Chat and remains unchanged for the versions used in Work and Codex.

The updated GPT-5.6 Sol and the slider will be available to Plus and Pro users right away in the ChatGPT app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. GPT-5.6 Luna is set to become the default model for Free and Go users starting next week, alongside the forthcoming "Think" button. These changes are applicable to the ChatGPT app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
