Explosion in Damascus suburb kills at least 1 person, wounds several others

A deadly explosion in the Jaramana suburb of Damascus, Syria, claimed at least one life and inflicted injuries on several others, according to reports from Syrian state media and an AP journalist on the scene on August 6, 2026. Syrian state television cited an unnamed security official, stating that the blast in Jaramana was triggered by an explosive device concealed in a minivan taxi.

The Health Ministry confirmed that seven individuals sustained injuries. An AP journalist witnessed the aftermath, observing one body extracted from the wreckage. Residents and rescue workers rushed to the scene, which was a busy commercial area replete with passengers inside the vehicle that detonated, causing a significant tremor.

The perpetrator of the attack has not been identified. Jaramana, predominantly inhabited by the Druze religious minority, has been plagued by inter-community tensions. Notably, in April 2025, sectarian clashes resulted in the deaths of ten individuals, involving Druze gunmen pitted against pro-government fighters supporting the current Islamist-led government.

This bombing marks the third such incident in less than a month, presenting additional challenges for interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who assumed office in December 2024 after leading an insurgency that toppled the Assad dynasty after five decades of rule. Prior to this month's attacks, two explosions injured eighteen people during French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Syria in early July, placing explosive devices in a garbage bin and a parked car.
