Exhumation of Raza’s body not ruled out after controversy over autopsy

Police in Karachi have not dismissed the prospect of exhuming the body of Mir Raza Ali, a former IBA student, following a dispute between a police surgeon and investigators over purported inconsistencies in the autopsy report. Mir Raza's family maintains he was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered, but investigators are exploring the possibility of suicide, citing evidence they claim supports his mental state.

The student's body, found with a gunshot wound to his chest, was discovered two days after he went missing from his residence in PECHS last month. Police Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed disclosed that the autopsy showed conflicting elements in the entry, trajectory, and exit wounds, and noted the absence of gunshot residue testing. She clarified that she did not personally conduct the autopsy or examine the body herself.

In response to her claims, police authorities released a statement emphasizing Dr Syed's lack of direct involvement in the autopsy process. The police expressed concern that her opinions, based solely on photographs, could jeopardize the ongoing investigation. The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is leading the case, with SSP Samiullah Soomro stating that Raza's friends and family disclosed significant financial difficulties and emotional stress leading up to his disappearance.

Friends testified that Raza had repeatedly requested large sums of money, indicating desperation, and even expressed fears about his upcoming marriage potentially not occurring. While the investigation is ongoing, the SIU has not reached any conclusions yet.
