England recall Dan Lawrence from two years of Test exile to face Pakistan

England has reintroduced Dan Lawrence into their Test squad, marking his return after a two-year hiatus, to face Pakistan. Lawrence, a 29-year-old batsman, will take up the middle-order position vacated by the retirement of captain Ben Stokes. The national selector, Marcus North, unveiled a 16-man squad for the first two matches of a three-Test series, where Lawrence will bat at number six.

In Jordan Cox's place, the 25-year-old batsman who replaced Stokes after a disciplinary breach will open at three. Joe Root continues to lead the side, having returned for his second captaincy stint. The first Test is scheduled to commence at Headingley on August 19.

Lawrence had been sidelined since his 14th Test appearance in September 2024, where he played as an opener against Sri Lanka. However, he has shone in the County Championship this season, averaging over 65 with five centuries to his name. Cox, a 25-year-old debutant, made his Test debut against New Zealand in June, filling the void left by Stokes.

Fast bowler Brydon Carse, who missed the series against New Zealand due to a hand injury, is also part of the squad. Marcus Trescothick, acting as the interim head coach, will be succeeded by former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as England’s red-ball coach. Ollie Pope has also been recalled, after being dropped following a series of poor scores during England's 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia.

The squad is a blend of emerging talent and seasoned players, aiming to balance the team's needs against a formidable Pakistan lineup. Former Australian cricketer Marcus North, responsible for the selection process, emphasized the inclusion of Lawrence following his stellar season with Surrey. Cox, recognized as one of the most promising talents in English cricket, will get his Test chance at number three, replacing the injured Jacob Bethell.

England has been struggling, losing seven of their last nine Tests, and has not secured a series victory since December 2024. North highlighted the importance of selecting a squad that combines young promise with the necessary experience to tackle a strong Pakistan team.
