EFCC action against Osun threatens democracy, says Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has criticized the Federal Government for allegedly deploying federal agencies to undermine opposition-controlled states, claiming that recent actions by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are politically motivated. In a statement on X, Makinde expressed concern that such actions threaten Nigeria's democracy.

He emphasized that while all governments should be subject to scrutiny, the selective targeting of certain states or public officials by agencies like the EFCC erodes public trust in these institutions. Makinde also condemned the freezing of an official state government account, stating it was unlawful and beyond the EFCC's authorized powers.

He further alleged that the timing of the action suggests an attempt to influence the upcoming Osun State governorship election. Makinde appealed for federal institutions to uphold their constitutional mandate with fairness, professionalism, and political neutrality, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant in protecting democratic values and the rule of law.
